The soil created in these riparian zones over hundreds of years covered hidden landscapes, until the flood revealed this secret underworld. The earth was abruptly laid bare. Without warning a cross-section of what had existed out of our sight was revealed to us. Roots penetrate the earth near a stream in a chaos of striving and competition for water and nutrients. While it is always sad to see a tree uprooted and fall, its exposed roots are a spectacular expression of nature's artistry. What a revelation it is to see this, like an ant farm or glass beehive in a schoolroom. Now we can marvel at the wondrous intricacy of life no longer hidden beneath our feet.

I was photographing along the stream and enjoying the colors, textures and shapes of the tangled mess of roots that had been exposed along the eroded bankside. Suddenly, some roots manifested as a little man, lying on his back, his head against a rock. It startled me when he vigorously called out: "Hi! I'm a little beat up, but not too worse for wear, and I am glad to be free of all that dirt, and see a little sunshine. That was a pretty exciting flood, but I am pleased to make my appearance, and meet you!"

I tried to ignore him, but he was so persistent I had to acknowledge him. I noticed that his belly had been worn smooth of his skin, and he was, so to speak, naked, and exposed. An arm and a leg were stretching out awkwardly, like a gangly newborn discovering its limbs. And a bright blue eye shone in the sun, greeting the new day. I don't normally experience this sort of thing, and his emergence caught me by surprise.

Being a part of nature myself I couldn't help but feel there must be some lesson I should learn from this strange event. Can we not grow and change without getting a little scraped up, naked, exposed and battered along the way? Are the wrinkles on our face and the folds in our brain proud medals from the campaigns we have lived through?

I'm glad I recognized him, and I suspect he has many friends in that canyon that I haven't yet met, which is a little creepy–but this is what wandering around in the woods is all about. So I keep going back for more. Each time I rediscover him in the canyon–at least I know where I am–I stop and say "Hi."]]> image-id:669

The soil created in these riparian zones over hundreds of years covered hidden landscapes, until the flood revealed this secret underworld. The earth was abruptly laid bare. Without warning a cross-section of what had existed out of our sight was revealed to us. Roots penetrate the earth near a stream in a chaos of striving and competition for water and nutrients. While it is always sad to see a tree uprooted and fall, its exposed roots are a spectacular expression of nature's artistry. What a revelation it is to see this, like an ant farm or glass beehive in a schoolroom. Now we can marvel at the wondrous intricacy of life no longer hidden beneath our feet.

I was photographing along the stream and enjoying the colors, textures and shapes of the tangled mess of roots that had been exposed along the eroded bankside. Suddenly, some roots manifested as a little man, lying on his back, his head against a rock. It startled me when he vigorously called out: "Hi! I'm a little beat up, but not too worse for wear, and I am glad to be free of all that dirt, and see a little sunshine. That was a pretty exciting flood, but I am pleased to make my appearance, and meet you!"

I tried to ignore him, but he was so persistent I had to acknowledge him. I noticed that his belly had been worn smooth of his skin, and he was, so to speak, naked, and exposed. An arm and a leg were stretching out awkwardly, like a gangly newborn discovering its limbs. And a bright blue eye shone in the sun, greeting the new day. I don't normally experience this sort of thing, and his emergence caught me by surprise.

Being a part of nature myself I couldn't help but feel there must be some lesson I should learn from this strange event. Can we not grow and change without getting a little scraped up, naked, exposed and battered along the way? Are the wrinkles on our face and the folds in our brain proud medals from the campaigns we have lived through?

I'm glad I recognized him, and I suspect he has many friends in that canyon that I haven't yet met, which is a little creepy–but this is what wandering around in the woods is all about. I'm glad I recognized him, and I suspect he has many friends in that canyon that I haven't yet met, which is a little creepy–but this is what wandering around in the woods is all about.
